On the road again...

A day on the road with our Head of Operations Dan Adams and MD Jamie Hawkings.

Last week we spent some time travelling across the South West visiting a number of current and upcoming schemes for Hawkings Cladding Ltd.

First stop was Weymouth to visit the extension works at the local Premier Inn where we will soon be installing the Valcan® - Manufacturer of Non-Combustible Cladding Materials Ceramapanel Rainscreen cladding.

It’s always great to be working again with Carter Lauren Construction Ltd . Our relationship now spans more than 9 years and this will be our eighth project together — including our third Premier Inn scheme. Longstanding partnerships like this are something we are incredibly proud of.

On the journey west we also stopped briefly at our East Quay project in Plymouth that we completed for our valued friends Obedair Nick Jeffery ahead of the upcoming one-year defects inspection of the Swisspearl United Kingdom facade. The building was looking fantastic in the sunshine and is another great example of how well delivered cladding remediation can transform a façade.

The day finished with our first site visit for the new training and development centre for Plymouth Argyle Football Club where we will be delivering the complete Etex EQUITONE UK by Etex and @ BTS Facades & Fabrications Feature panel
façade package.

It was great to see the primary structure now complete, with the sacrificial membrane in place ready to be removed ahead of the façade works commencing.

We are excited to be working with Whitebox Construction Management led by Ali Staddon & Muna Sono onsite, and the Graeme D. who has been fantastic to collaborate with during Pre-Con.

Exciting months ahead with works due to start on site for these two schemes later this month/early April.

Tamar Valley Crematorium - Plymouth

We’re excited to announce that Hawkings Cladding Ltd will be starting work this month on the Tamar Valley Crematorium in Plymouth!

Having secured this project back in 2024, we’re thrilled to be working again with our friends at Classic Builders to deliver a facility that will offer a peaceful and respectful space for the local community. We’ll be supplying and installing the Rockpanel Woods, which will help the building harmonise with its natural surroundings.

HCL Complete A UK First Fully Non-Combustible Compliant Curved Brick Slip Installation!

We are proud to announce the successful delivery of one of the first non-combustible, fully warranted, and compliant Corium Brick Slip installations using glazed Dover White wienerberger bricks at the McArthur Glen Designer Outlet in Bridgend for our repeat clients Carter Lauren Construction Ltd.

While curved Corium installations have been completed before, they’ve typically relied on combustible ply/sheathings or non-compliant designs to achieve the curve. However, working in full collaboration with Wienerberger and Taylor Maxwell, we’ve delivered an engineered adaptation of the flat-faced system ensuring compliance without compromise. Every adjustment made to accommodate the curve stayed within the certification parameters.

Though this may be a small scheme, it serves as a benchmark for future installs, demonstrating that compliant, curved, non-combustible brick slip facades are not just possible but practical.

Block B Milestone Complete!

Trood-Exeter Phase Two

We’re excited to share the completion of Block B at Trood-Exeter Phase Two! After 12 Months of work on this site, we continue to deliver on block milestones, with two more blocks remaining in the project.

For our repeat client Vistry Group Countrywide Vistry, we proudly installed striking facades, including projecting bespoke Earnshaw Engineering Ltd PPC feature pods with EQUITONE UK Linea infill panels, showcasing our commitment to quality and innovation.

At the recent handover, Contracts Manager Dan Adams represented HCL as Vistry and Livewest praised our QA procedures and documentation, calling them exemplary. This is a testament to the attention to detail and professionalism that sets HCL apart—and it’s always included in our project delivery costs.

Great progress at our scheme in East Quay, Sutton Harbour, Plymouth!

We’re excited to see the scaffold coming down, unveiling the impressive results of our cladding remediation work featuring the versatile Swisspeal Patina Cladding and Copper Façade replacement.

This project incorporates both mechanically face-fixed and secret hanger-fixed cladding, making use of innovative materials like Swisspearl United Kingdom, Steph Garcia Olmo, BBS Facades Ltd, Plastestrip, Ash & Lacy, ROCKWOOL UK, Tenmat Ltd, Jeremy Fraser, Euroform Versaroc, Mainline Products Ltd and Effisus - Excellence in Weatherproofing.

As part of this remediation scheme, we’re proud to collaborate with principal contractors Obedair, Simon Lawrence Joe Wheeler MCIOB who have proven to be among the best in the industry. CREWW - Exeter University

We’re thrilled to showcase a recent achievement the CREWW scheme at Exeter University.

Collaborating closely with Morgan Sindall Construction and Saunders Boston Architects, HCL was proud to be the chosen façade contractor for this innovative project.

We delivered the eye-catching Taylor Maxwell Anvell Cassette cladding system and Ash & Lacy Perforated screening for the new, state-of-the-art Centre for Resilience in Environment, Water, and Waste (CREWW).

This building marks the UK’s first purpose-built, transdisciplinary research centre in the water sector, dedicated to tackling the most critical challenges in delivering safe and resilient water and waste services both at home and abroad.

We worked hand-in-hand with Morgan Sindall Construction Design Manager and Saunders Boston Architects to bring the building's concept to life — a dynamic downhill "cascade" of lightweight cladding that flows from upper to lower levels, perfectly embodying CREWW's mission of water flowing over earth.

This project is another fantastic example of supply chain collaboration. PLOT B240 Barrack Court, Plymouth

We're excited to share our involvement in the stunning Barrack Court project, a development of high-quality business units and offices on William Prance Road. This is another key initiative by the council to address the shortage of modern business spaces in Plymouth.

With a clear brief and specifications from Bailey Partnership, HCL efficiently advanced the design and refined the details for the façade. Our work included the installation of Etex 8mm Natura panels in various colours, Plastestrip H&H support system, ROCKWOOL UK Duoslab insulation, Tenmat Ltd. Fire barriers, and Earnshaw Engineering Ltd flashings. The result- A façade that not only meets the functional needs but also looks amazing.

Office for National Statistics (ONS), Newport

Throwback to our impressive 6,800m² facade refurbishment project for the ONS (Office for National Statistics), where Hawkings Cladding Ltd led as Principal Contractor. From Pre-construction planning to site setup, scaffolding, logistics, and health and safety, we managed every detail to ensure the seamless installation of the Rainscreen cladding.

We installed EQUITONE UK 8mm panels and the SFS Group envelope framing system, all while the building remained fully occupied—a challenging feat that our team expertly handled.

Harbour Arch Quay - The Barbican, Plymouth

We’re excited to announce the completion of the Envelope Package to the stunning new Harbour Arch Quay development. Nestled at the water’s edge, this building offers breathtaking views of Sutton Harbour Marina, The Barbican, and Plymouth Sound.

Hawkings Cladding was engaged directly by the Client in 2022 for the pre-construction design and procurement of the Rainscreen through-wall package. Our work included designing, supplying, and installing Ash & Lacy SFS Framing, Euroform Versaroc Sheathing, and a comprehensive Plasterstrip support system, featuring the striking Etex Tectiva 8mm Panels, CGL Facades Gold Anodised Planks, STO Glass Rainscreen Panels.

Due to the complex nature of the build and challenging site logistics, early and detailed design collaboration between HCL, Peter Curno of ADG Architecture Design Graphics and Garry Mason of Airey & Coles Consulting Engineers was crucial to delivering the high-quality results and performance demanded by this project.

Now the project is complete, we’re proud to admire the beauty of Harbour Arch Quay, reflect on the hard work involved, and appreciate the fantastic supply chain partners that made this build possible.

Premier Inn - Cribbs Causeway, Bristol

In collaboration with our trusted partners at Carter Lauren Construction Ltd, HCL played a pivotal role in the successful rebuild of the Premier Inn Causeway after it was devastated by a fire back in 2019.

HCL was appointed to deliver the striking external façade on a full design, supply, and install basis. Our work included the installation of Weinerberger Brickslips, 8mm Fibre Cement Cladding, Support Framing, various feature PPC pods/flashings, and Fire Barriers, contributing to the stunning new look of the building.

Given the tight schedule, HCL's involvement was critical to the timely and successful delivery of the façade. By working closely with the talented Axiom Architects LLP and a proactive design manager in Robert Downs, we were able to design a façade with minimal sequenced interfaces, allowing trades to progress quickly and efficiently.

Considering the construction of the structure and the layout of the external works, it was essential to design a robust and accommodating support structure that would allow for movement within the primary structure along with any differential movement between the structure and the external Facade. This was essential to ensure long-term functionality and performance of the building.

Dunmail Road, Bristol - Housing Complex

We have proudly completed the External Rainscreen package for much-needed housing in Bristol for our valued client, Euqans. The installation of 77+ External Porches and Bin Stores came with its challenges, featuring some very complex detailing, but with precision execution, it truly transformed the building’s exterior.

This project showcases not only the versatility of Rockpanel, SFS Group & Plasterstrip products but also stands as a testament to the commitment and drive of Hawkings Cladding Ltd to deliver top-tier workmanship. The project elevated the building's aesthetics while enhancing its long-term protection. Rockpanel continues to deliver on its promise of low maintenance and high performance, making it a standout feature of the building’s design.

Bristol Airport Opens £9.5m Multi-Storey Car Park

Construction work on the project at Bristol Airport began in November 2017.

North Somerset Council leader Nigel Ashton unveiled a plaque to mark the development’s completion, which opened to the public in May.

The new airport car park has more than 1,100 spaces across three levels and is situated within a short walking distance of the terminal, with two additional floors providing an extra 750 spaces to be added in winter.’

‘Goldbeck Construction built the facility, which features enhanced parking bay technology, helping drivers to easily locate empty spaces.

The development follows recent improvements elsewhere across the site in the past year, including a £2.5million customer reception centre in the silver zone car park and a £2.3million upgrade to the immigration hall.’

‘Work on a second multi-storey car park, featuring a public transport interchange on the top level, will commence next year and is expected to open in 2021, adding nearly 2,000 more spaces.

Plans for a third multi-storey car park will be included in a forthcoming planning application, with the airport’s expansion scheme seeking to increase its annual passenger numbers to about 12 million per year.’
